A Cramlington pharmaceuticals manufacturer has announced plans to install an on-site wind mast as the first step in its plans for a renewable energy project. Aesica eventually hopes to install a wind turbine in order to generate its own electricity.
Aesica is proposing the installation of a 60m wind monitoring mast on its pharmaceutical manufacturing site at Cramlington as part of a long standing company commitment towards sustainable development and reduced energy costs. The proposed wind mast will calculate wind speed and direction and will help decide the final siting, size and specification of any future wind turbine.
Providing the wind monitoring results are favourable, Aesica aims to apply for the installation of a wind turbine on the site in 2006. The current tip height and output of the turbine are yet to be determined but the company would like to maximise on-site generation. Any electricity generated from a turbine will be fed directly into the company's electricity supply, reducing the need for the company to import power from the National Grid and reducing its emissions of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas.
Adam Sims, Finance Director for Aesica, said: "Caring for the environment and the well being of future generations is at the heart of company policy and decision-making. The company has committed itself to a sustainable development strategy, with one of our key targets being a reduction in carbon emissions. Installing a wind monitoring mast on our Cramlington site will be the first step towards reaching this key target.
"If the results of the wind monitoring study are encouraging, the next step will be to submit a planning application for a wind turbine in the same location. We will do our best to ensure that the local public and site employees are consulted and informed of the proposal as it develops.
"Wind turbines provide the most feasible option for establishing an effective renewable energy source on our site and will also reduce energy costs, helping the company maintain its competitive market position and ensuring the long term success of the Cramlington site."
The company will be submitting a planning application for the wind monitoring mast to Blyth Valley Borough Council. If the application is successful it is anticipated that the wind monitoring mast could be installed in early 2006.
Aesica Cramlington employs over 150 people in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals.
The project is being managed for Aesica by renewable energy consultancy TNEI Services Ltd.
